On windswept roofs, a ‘green` turn
It is torque on terrace. T. NANDAKUMAR gives the low-down on small wind turbines for home use that can help lower energy consumption and lessen the load on the grid.
Is the monthly electricity bill making a mockery of your efforts to lower the family`s power consumption and contribute to a smaller carbon footprint?
Maybe, it is time to throw your problems to the wind and sit back. Small wind turbines that can be mounted on the roof of a house to generate electricity are slowly becoming popular in the southern States.
A handful of families have turned to the wind to settle their worries. Dealers in small wind turbines say that more people are now willing to invest in harnessing wind for domestic power generation.
Small wind turbines currently available in the Kerala market are capable of generating 400 watts to 5,100 watts of power. “Considering the atmospheric conditions, hybrid systems involving wind and solar power generation are more appropriate for a State such as Kerala,” says T.L. Victor, partner of the Thiruvananthapuram-based Enarch Energy Solutions, dealers of the Unitron range of hybrid power systems.
The turbines are suitable for locations that have a minimum wind speed of 4.5 metres per second (16 kmph). “In Kerala, most places within five km from the coast can be considered for installation of roof-mounted turbines. Large parts of Idukki, Palakkad, Thrissur, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Wayanad districts meet the minimum wind speed requirement,” Mr. Victor says. “With Kerala getting almost 300 days of good sunlight, it makes sense to go in for a hybrid system incorporating solar and wind generation.”
Enhanced wind speed can compensate the fall in solar power generation during the cloudy monsoon days. A 650-watt small wind turbine can be matched with a 150-watt solar panel. A typical wind-solar hybrid electric generation system comprises a turbine, solar panels, an electronic charge regulator, an inverter/ UPS and a battery bank.
A basic version of the wind-solar hybrid system can produce 100 units a month, bringing down an average family`s power bill significantly.
Dharesan Unnithan, director, Energy Management Centre, says, “Investing more than Rs.1 lakh in a hybrid system may not be an attractive proposition for low-end consumers who run up a monthly bill of about Rs.150. It is the high end domestic consumers using power-intensive equipment such as ACs [air-conditioners] who can drive the market. An income-tax exemption for such investment would make it more attractive.”
Enarch recently completed the installation of a hybrid system, including a roof-mounted small wind turbine, solar panel and battery pack at a house in Vadakara belonging to Sudheerkumar, a civil engineer. “The wind conditions and the location of the house right in front of an open field made it an ideal choice,” Mr. Victor says.
The wind turbine consists of a propeller connected to a generator through a shaft. The propeller rotates when it comes in contact with the wind, setting the shaft in rotary motion to produce mechanical energy. This energy is converted to electricity and used to charge the batteries.
A small hybrid system with wind turbine, solar panel and batteries will cost approximately Rs.1.25 lakh. The wind turbines available today sport aerodynamically designed light-weight fibre-reinforced plastic blades and a vane to turn the fan in the direction of the wind. Designed to be fitted on sea-going yachts, they are virtually maintenance-free and have a life of 20-25 years. The batteries last up to 10 years.
Low-speed turbines that start generation at 3 metres per second are best suited for places with irregular wind speeds.
